The Best Place to Install Smart Home Security Cameras

In 2019, 196,291 break-ins were recorded in Canada! In fact, a residential break-in happens every 90 seconds! Everyone wants their family and property to be protected. With the numerous indoor and outdoor security devices available, this is now possible. Security cameras can help stop home break-ins and keep your family and property safe from vandals and burglars. However, you need to strategize, position and install your cameras appropriately or you may not be as protected as you think. The following are a few tips for placing your security cameras where they’ll provide the best coverage.

Where should you install security cameras?

Catching thieves and criminals can only be done when your camera is put in the right location. While all homes are situated differently, most have high-traffic spots that are most vulnerable to break-ins. Consider which locations in and around your home will provide the widest viewing ranges. Place cameras to cover as many of these areas as possible.

  • Front door: Statistics show that 34% of burglars use the front door. It’s also where package thieves strike. Place an exterior camera above or near your front door, facing downward so that it covers the area a few feet in front of the opening. For enclosed front porches, mount a camera in the corner, facing your entryway.
  • Back and side doors: Nearly one-fourth of all break-ins happen through the back door. This entrance is usually out of sight, allowing undetected entry. It’s wise to add cameras to the back and side doors.
  • Off-street windows: 23% of burglars enter a home through a first-floor window, especially those that don’t directly face a street. Install exterior cameras above these entry points or use interior cameras that face the windows.
  • Garage and driveway: 9% of thieves enter through the garage. A camera pointed at your garage and/or driveway monitors another possible entryway into your home and helps detect suspicious activity. Protect your tools, bikes, cars, sports equipment and BBQ with a garage camera.
  • Yard: A yard camera lets you view your children, animals, those passing by and trespassers.
  • Interior common areas: Thieves are inclined to search for valuables in specific areas (kitchen, living room, master bedroom). Use cameras to watch over these spaces.
  • Stairway and/or hallway: Placing a camera in the main thoroughfares of your home makes it difficult for someone to move around undetected, even if they enter through an unmonitored entry point.

Tips to optimize camera placement:

Once you decide upon locations for your cameras you need to place and install them to cover the intended area.

  • Install exterior cameras 8 to10 feet from the ground.
  • Don’t point cameras directly at the sun.
  • Decide whether you want the camera to be visible or hidden.
  • Keep interior cameras near the ceiling.
  • Hang indoor cameras in the corner of a room.
  • Screwing cameras directly into a wall is most secure.
  • Angle for indirect light (away from lamps, light fixtures, windows).
  • Make sure your cameras have reliable access to a strong Wi-Fi signal.
  • Ensure your camera does not capture areas where your neighbours have an expectation of privacy.

Smart home security cameras can be installed in multiple areas throughout your home. They’re a great addition to any home security system, providing 24/7 monitoring regardless of your location. Consider smart home security cameras for your yard, garage and dwelling.

Choosing a Custom SMART Home Security Solution

You’ve decided to purchase and install a smart home security system. You’d like the system to meet your individual needs. There are so many different components and technologies that can be incorporated. How do you know what to include in your custom smart home security solution?

There are a few basic questions that will help determine the right custom smart home security solution for you and your family:

  • What type of dwelling do I reside in? (townhouse, single-detached house, semi-detached house, main or second floor of condo or apartment building, upper floor of a condo or apartment building)
  • What type of protection do I want? (from break-ins, environmental hazards, carbon monoxide, fire, flood)
  • Where do I want to monitor? (inside my home, outside my home, both)
  • What outdoor areas do I want to see with cameras? (front yard, back yard, garage, front door)
  • What indoor areas do I want to see with cameras? (living room, baby room, entrance)
  • How do I want to install the system? (self-installation or hire a professional)
  • How big is my home? (how many doors and windows, how many hallways)
  • Which entrances do I want to control (front door, back door, garage door)
  • Do I want to control the system remotely?
  • What is my family’s routine?
  • What is my budget?

The answers to these questions reveal what kind of features are best for you and how large and complex a system you need.

Professional vs. Self-installation

You have the choice to install your smart security system yourself or hire trained professionals.

  • Professional installation: Home security companies send a trained professional to your home for a consultation and safety assessment. You’ll be able to discuss your security priorities, budget, and expectations. These professionals also offer product package bundling and years of industry experience. Professional help comes with an installation fee, but you won’t have to do any of the work.
  • Self-installation: Security systems are easier than ever to install without professional help. If you’re handy with tools, comfortable with basic home repairs and don’t mind spending a little time with online tutorials, you can likely install a basic smart security system yourself. Purchase a self-install kit with your chosen devices and necessary instructions. Install in your own time with online guidance and call in support.

Choose professional installation if you want:

  • Sensors for every door and window
  • Both indoor and outdoor security cameras
  • A scheduled appointment with a professional explaining your options
  • A variety of optional security devices (video doorbell, smart locks, glass break sensors, entry sensors, fire/smoke/CO detectors)

Choose self-installation if you want:

  • A simple system with a few window and door sensors
  • A single security camera
  • No installation fees

Security systems with app compatibility can be controlled remotely.

What is remote access?

Remote access is the ability to manage your security system using an app on your smartphone, tablet or computer. New technology allows you to set up and control your home security system from anywhere. It’s a simple way to make your home a little safer and give you peace of mind This technology allows you to:

What Does a Smart Home Security System Include?

A home monitoring system consists of many components that work together to keep you and your family safe. The following are the main security system components you should be aware of if you are considering investing in a smart home security system.

  • Security cameras: Surveillance cameras enable livestream footage remotely and send a notification to your device (through the use of an app) when the camera detects movement, people or packages. They can be installed indoors or outdoors and can often tilt and pan. Some are even equipped with night vision capabilities. Use these cameras to monitor your home and loved ones from wherever you are.
  • Motion sensors use vibration, infrared heat, microwave pulses or a combination of these to detect when an intruder enters a home. They’re usually placed in the main entryway on the ground floor notifying you when there are unusual movements within your property. Motion sensors can turn on indoor and outdoor lights, activate cameras, set off alarms and more.
  • Entry sensors: This contact sensor is placed on a window and/or door and senses if that entry point is opened, alerting your control panel if a door or window is breached. One piece of the component attaches to the door or window itself, while the counterpart is attached to the frame. Entry sensors are suggested for all windows and doors on the ground floor.
  • Glass break sensors detect the frequency of the sound of breaking glass and alert via mobile notification. They let you know if someone attempts to enter your home by breaking the windows or glass doors. They’re placed indoors, near glass features and are an effective way to boost security.
  • Smart locks allow keyless entry to your home via an app. Keyless entry options include proximity unlocking with your smartphone, remote unlocking with your smartphone, custom code numbers for anyone who needs to enter your home, voice commands, and touch or fingerprint recognition. These locks allow you to create permanent or temporary entry codes for visiting guests, cleaning services, dog walkers, repair services and individual members of your family.
  • Video doorbells have a camera that livestreams what it captures, sending notifications to your mobile device and showing a live feed of whoever is waiting on your doorstep. This makes it easy to communicate with visitors via an installed speaker, without having to open the door.
  • Control panel: This device is used to activate and deactivate monitors. Your control panel is the central station for your entire security system, so it’s the most important piece of equipment in the system.
  • Garage door security: Tilt sensors alert you when your garage door is opening and allow you to open and close your garage door from wherever you are.
  • Smartphone access allows you to control and view your home security system from your phone or another wireless device.
  • Yard signs and window stickers placed prominently in front of and on your home help to deter intruders from entering.
  • 24/7 Professional Monitoring is frequently a part of a smart alarm system. An alarm goes to the company’s monitoring center where it is determined whether emergency services are required. If needed, the monitoring center contacts the appropriate dispatch center (fire, police, ambulance).

Keeping your home and family safe is a basic concern for most homeowners. Before purchasing a security system, it’s important to know about the components included so you can choose a system that’s strong in all areas and includes important security devices. Enjoy peace of mind knowing your family and home are safe. Secure your property from intruders, vandalism, and burglars with the latest in technology by considering a smart security alarm system. It will have your back!

Do Home Security Systems Deter Crime?

In Canada, a residential break-in happens every 90 seconds! More than 80% of these break-ins occur during daylight hours. Most of these illegal entries are made by amateur burglars entering through a basement or ground floor door/window with speed and force. No wonder more and more homeowners are expressing interest in home security systems. Before you install a system, it’s natural to wonder if it will actually deter crime. The answer is a resounding YES!

  • A study done by Rutgers University School of Criminal Justice showed that residential burglar alarm systems decrease crime in homes and in a city. The results demonstrated that neighbourhoods, where security systems were densely installed, had fewer incidences of burglaries than neighbourhoods with fewer alarms.
  • UNC Department of Criminal Justice & Criminology surveyed 422 burglars and found that most burglars took outdoor security cameras and other surveillance equipment into consideration when choosing a target. 60% of criminals said they’d choose another target if they detected an alarm and 50% said they’d leave immediately if they found an alarm system during the burglary.
  • 24 hour monitored alarm systems have been shown to reduce the chance of a break-in and, if a break-in does occur, reduce the amount of property stolen.
  • A survey of ex-convicts conducted by Unlock on behalf of the Co-op Insurance company determined that cameras and barking dogs are the top two reasons criminals opt-out of breaking into a home.

Whether you’re considering a single camera near the front door or a fully integrated and monitored system, home alarm systems do protect your property from being targeted by criminals. They’re a smart investment, providing peace of mind and increased safety. Keep yourself, your loved ones, and your valuables safe and secure. Invest in a home security system.

Smart Home Automation Brings Security to Your Family

Advanced technology is shaping the way we protect our property. Keeping an eye on your home (when in residence or when you’re away) has never been easier. There are some incredible components associated with home automation, many of which are incorporated into smart security systems (smart doorbells, smart locks, smart cameras, smart lights, smart smoke alarms, etc.).

What is Smart Home Automation?

Smart home automation is the automatic control of electronic devices in and around your home.  A system can monitor and/or control home attributes such as lighting, climate, entertainment technology, and appliances. It may also include home security such as access control and alarm systems (cameras, sensors, touch panels, video doorbells, etc.). Smart home automation allows homeowners to control the security of their home from a mobile device anywhere in the world. It makes life more convenient, can save you money on heating, cooling and electricity bills and (best of all) helps improve the security of your property.

Automated Home Security Systems Work on Three Levels:

  • Monitoring means that users can check on their devices remotely through the use of an app. One example; you could view the live feed from a smart security camera.
  • Control means that the homeowner can control devices remotely, like panning a security camera to see more of the living space.
  • Automation means devices are set up to trigger one another, like having a smart siren go off whenever an armed security camera detects motion.

The Security Benefits of Home Automation:

Home automation provides a number of security benefits to homeowners.

  • Remotely control your home’s security system, lights, locks and thermostat.
  • Arm, disarm and check the status of your security system on your smartphone or tablet.
  • View live feeds of what is happening at your home and receive video and picture notifications on your web-enabled devices.
  • Lock and unlock your doors using a dedicated app from anywhere with internet access.

With so many smart devices on the market, there’s no limit to what you can automate in your home, making your life safer and more convenient than ever before! If you’re considering automated home security, look to the professionals for help. They have the knowledge, skills and experience to help you install the home security system that’s right for you. From keeping an eye on your children and/or pets to watching your porch for deliveries, home automation helps you monitor what matters most.
